On 30 January the President of the Supreme Court Valentyna Danishevska met with the President of European Court of Human Rights Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, upon whose invitation Mrs. Danishevska visited Strasbourg to participate in opening the judicial year on 31 January.
The President of the Supreme Court thanked for the possibility to participate in such an important for the whole European community event and put emphasis on the leading role of the ECHR in promoting the harmonization of European standards on human rights and freedoms and on the especial significance of the ECHR case-law for the CoE member states.
Roderick Liddell, the Registrar of the ECHR, Hanna Yudkivska, the ECHR judge from Ukraine, and Hanne Junker, the Head of the Department of Justice and Legal Cooperation of the Council of Europe, also participated in this meeting.
Within the visit to Strasbourg, the SC President has also discussed the judicial reform and judges’ independence with the Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert and Schnutz Dürr, Head of the Constitutional Justice Division of the Venice Commission.
Valentyna Danishevska has met with Christos Giakoumopoulos, Director General of the Directorate for General Human Rights and Rule of Law (DGI) of the Council of Europe, and the Council of Europe Director of Human Rights Christophe Poirel, as well as with the Head of the Justice Sector Reform Unit of the CoE Department of Justice and Legal Cooperation Lilit Daneghian and the Projects Coordinator of the Reform Unit of this very Department Andrii Kavakin.
