10 october 2019, 17:46

Today, on 10 October, the President of the Supreme Court Valentyna Danishevska and judges of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court have welcomed a distinguished guest – the President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom from 2012 to 2017 Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury – in Klovskyi Palace.

Valentyna Danishevska reminded that just a year ago she and the SC judges within their visit to London had participated in the official opening of the consultative Project of the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom for the provision with technical assistance for the creation and activity of the High Court on Intellectual Property of Ukraine. That is when the SC President invited Lord Neuberger to visit Ukraine and the Supreme Court.

Valentyna Danishevska informed the guest about the structure and functions of the SC. Moreover, the President of the Supreme Court drew attention to the fact that the authority performed by the SC of the United Kingdom was similar to those performed by the SC Grand Chamber in Ukraine.

Valentyna Danishevska remarked that judges of the SC GC had significant workload. And the last legislative amendments made by the Parliament, particularly, regarding the grounds for transferring a case for its review by the SC GC, were expected to reduce the workload of judges of the SC GC.

The President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in 2012 – 2017 informed about the structure of the judicial system in his country and the filters for the admission of cases to higher courts. Particularly, he noted that the SC of the United Kingdom reviewed cases of significant social importance. Besides, Lord Neuberger provided answers to questions of the SC judges.

The event participants also discussed several expert recommendations as for the establishment of the High Court on Intellectual Property, as well as issues concerning the selection of judges, increasing trust in the judicial power, the definition of “cases of social interest”, the solution of jurisdictional disputes, etc.

At the end of the meeting the parties thanked each other and expressed their hopes for the further cooperation.
