Judges of the Supreme Court Participated in Seminar of the World Bank as for Justice Survey

On 18 July 2019 the Vice-President of the Supreme Court – President of the Commercial Cassation Court Bohdan Lvov, the Vice-President of the Criminal Cassation Court within the Supreme Court Valentyna Shchepotkina, judges of the SC Grand Chamber Dmytro Hudyma and Olena Kibenko, judges of the Commercial Cassation Court within the Supreme Court Oleh Vaskovskyi, Iryna Kondratova and Yehor Krasnov, judges of the Criminal Cassation Court within the Supreme Court Herman Anisimov and Olha Buleiko participated in the seminar as for justice survey organized by the World Bank.

In her introductory speech, Satu Kahkonen, the World Bank Country Director to Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine put emphasis on the importance of effective protection of investors’ rights and interests in order to create appropriate investment climate and to increase the level of foreign investments involvement into Ukrainian economy.

The seminar was aimed at the presentation of surveying methodology and provision of participants with the possibility to discuss specific for the country issues, which might be included into the survey.

The European Commission representative Martin Klauke told about initiating the noted survey within strengthening the cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union in justice sphere, which was one of basic goals of Ukraine-EU association.

The World Bank together with the European Commission in cooperation with the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the High Council of Justice, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine and other participants implement regional multilateral investigation of justice in Ukraine. The investigation results will promote the reformation and modernization of Ukrainian judicial system.

David Bernstein, the World Bank chief specialist for the state sector reform, noted that there were three main reasons to hold that survey: to determine the reform’s impact on justice; to get data, on the basis of which future reforms would be formed and implemented; to ensure the appropriate management of initiatives as for reformation.

The Supreme Court judges supported such an initiative and shared their opinions regarding the inclusion of separate questions into the survey to receive the most objective image in the sphere of justice administering in Ukraine, particularly, as for the communication strategy and case law of the Supreme Court.
