Today, on 25 January, the President of the Supreme Court Valentyna Danishevska held meeting with Thorbjørn Jagland, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, within the visit to Strasbourg.
While this meeting Valentyna Danishevska told that from the very beginning of work of the new Supreme Court the main task of its activity had consisted of strengthening the authority of the judicial system. This could be accomplished by the stability and uniformity of case law formed by the Supreme Court.
Valentyna Danishevska also informed that within the first year of its operation the Supreme Court had received and considered a large number of cases.
The President of the Supreme Court noted that during that year a great step forward had been made, since the judges had considered new cases received by the Supreme Court, as well as cases, which had not been considered by Cassation Courts and the Supreme Court of Ukraine. Presently, the judges of the Supreme Court have considered 80 thousand cases – a half of the amount of cases received by the Court from the very beginning of its operation.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe remarked that he realized the pace of work of the Supreme Court, and the number of considered cases had really impressed him.
Mr. Secretary General underlined that the Supreme Court established by means of transparent competition, and its activity represented the success story of the judicial reform in Ukraine; and judges of the Supreme Court were the contribution into this reform.
