Support for the judiciary on the path to the EU: the Supreme Court and the EU project PravoJustice4EU define cooperation priorities

The President of the Supreme Court, Stanislav Kravchenko, congratulated the new head of the EU project PravoJustice4EU (the Project), Erick Martinville, on the start of his work and wished him success, expressing confidence that the long-standing partnership between the Supreme Court and the Project will continue to strengthen and deliver practical results for the development of Ukrainian justice.

Erick Martinville noted that the key focus of the Project’s fourth phase will be support for Ukraine’s judiciary on its path to European integration, taking into account the practical needs of implementing the Rule of Law Roadmap. In particular, the work will concentrate on negotiating chapters 23 “Judiciary and Fundamental Rights” and 24 “Justice, Freedom and Security”.

The parties outlined the key results achieved during the previous phase of the Project and focused on the plan for further joint work. Given the opening of the first negotiating cluster on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, primary attention will be given to implementing the measures provided for in the Roadmap.

At the same time, the meeting participants also discussed other areas of cooperation that meet the current needs of the judiciary. In particular, they discussed the implementation of new ideas for improving the functionality of the Supreme Court’s Database of Legal Positions.

The meeting was also attended by Acting Head of the Supreme Court Administration Rasim Babanly, Head of Component 1 “Support for Justice Sector Reforms” of the PravoJustice4EU project Maja Cvitan Grubišin, Deputy Head of the EU Pravo-Justice project (third phase) and Chief Expert on Judicial Reform of the “Judicial Reform” component Olha Sribniak, Key Expert on European Integration of the PravoJustice4EU project Stanislav Ivasyk, and Director of the Expertise France office in Ukraine Sofiia Oliinyk.
