First stage of the British-Ukrainian Programme aimed at strengthening the capacity of commercial courts has been completed

Judges of the Supreme Court Kostiantyn Pilkov, Ivan Mishchenko, and Oleksii Sluch took part in the final session of the first stage of the Ukrainian Commercial Courts Judicial Capacity Building Programme, which took place on 8–11 June 2026 in Krakow, Poland. The final session brought together judges of commercial courts of all instances who successfully completed the first stage of online training during the first half of 2026 as part of the Programme. 

The programme, aimed at strengthening the capacity of commercial courts, was organized by the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) with the support of the Ministry of Justice of the United Kingdom. Supreme Court Grand Chamber Judge Kostiantyn Pilkov and Supreme Court Judges in the Commercial Cassation Court Olena Kibenko and Ivan Mishchenko contributed to the development of the programme.

During the programme, judges had the opportunity to engage in professional dialogue with their British colleagues and practitioners, who shared the best British and international practices in resolving commercial disputes and ensuring the enforcement of court and arbitral decisions. Ukrainian judges shared their own experience in handling commercial cases and discussed possibilities for adapting certain tools to improve the efficiency of commercial dispute resolution within the Ukrainian commercial procedure.

Representatives of the UK Ministry of Justice, BIICL, lecturers, and participants of the Programme highlighted the success of this year’s pilot project, its high practical value for enhancing the qualifications of commercial court judges, and announced their intention to continue and develop this initiative as part of supporting Ukraine and strengthening the capacity of its state institutions.
