The International Conference “The Role of Judges in Amicable Dispute Resolution in Europe: Judicial Mediation and Judicial Conciliation in Comparative Perspective” held in Warsaw (Republic of Poland), served as a platform for professional dialogue among judges, scholars, and mediation practitioners from various European countries on the development of modern approaches to amicable dispute resolution and the role of judges in these processes. As part of the Ukrainian delegation, Larysa Rohach, President of the Commercial Cassation Court within the Supreme Court, took part in the event.

During the conference, participants discussed the importance of mediation and judicial reconciliation as elements of a modern, effective, and accessible justice system. Particular attention was paid to the effective use of mediation in commercial disputes, increasing public trust in the judiciary through reconciliation procedures, and European standards for the training of judges and mediators.

Speakers included, among others, the President of the European Association of Judges for Mediation (GEMME EUROPE), Judge of the Cour de Cassation of France Frédéric Agostini; Vice President of GEMME EUROPE and founder of GEMME Polska, Judge Monika Włodarczyk; Judge of the Supreme Court of Lithuania Dalia Vasarienė; Vice President for Civil Cases of the Regional Court in Warsaw, Judge Rafał Wagner; and Director of the Instytut Wymiaru Sprawiedliwości, Professor Piotr Rylski.

As part of the conference, Larysa Rohach also spoke during professional discussions on the development of judicial mediation and the role of the judge in modern models of amicable dispute resolution. The President of the Commercial Cassation Court presented Ukraine’s vision on these issues, taking into account recent legislative changes and judicial practice.

The participants discussed the balance between traditional justice and alternative dispute resolution methods, practical models of interaction between judges and mediators, and the transformation of the judge’s role — from that of a pure arbitrator to a facilitator of dialogue between the parties.

The Ukrainian delegation also took part in the General Assembly of GEMME Europe, where issues of international cooperation in the field of judicial mediation, the exchange of practical experience between national GEMME sections, and prospects for implementing European standards of alternative dispute resolution in national judicial systems were discussed.
