The Supreme Court became a partner of GEMME

10 june 2025, 13:16

In May this year, the Court of Cassation of Belgium hosted a meeting of the Board of the European Association of Judges for Mediation (Groupement Européen des Magistrats pour la Médiation - GEMME). Oleksandr Mamalui, Vice President of the Supreme Court, was invited to participate in the meeting.

During the meeting, the participants discussed the prospects for developing mediation within the judicial systems of Council of Europe member states, as well as the possibility of exchanging practices and involving judges in joint educational and professional initiatives.

As part of the international dialogue, on 16 May 2025, the Court of Cassation of Belgium signed a Partnership Agreement between the Supreme Court, GEMME and the Ukrainian National Section of GEMME, which establishes the official status of the Supreme Court as a partner of the Groupement Européen des Magistrats pour la Médiation.

This partnership opens up wide opportunities for the participation of Ukrainian judges and other qualified professionals in the activities of the organisation.

The partnership aims to:

- facilitate closer ties between GEMME member judges, Ukrainian judges, and qualified professionals working to promote alternative dispute resolution methods;

- develop the exchange of experience between the Supreme Court and GEMME sections on alternative dispute resolution methods;

- facilitate the training and information of Ukrainian judges in their efforts to implement alternative dispute resolution methods.

Signing this agreement is an important step towards integrating the Ukrainian judicial system into the European legal framework, as well as further developing mediation as an effective means of amicably resolving disputes.
