UK-Ukraine programme to strengthen capacity of commercial courts launches

05 may 2025, 17:31

The Supreme Court has joined the development of an international programme aimed at strengthening the capacity of Ukrainian commercial courts.

Larysa Rohach, President of the Commercial Cassation Court of the Supreme Court, and Supreme Court Judges Olena Kibenko, Ivan Mishchenko and Kostiantyn Pilkov, together with judges of the London Commercial Court, participated as experts in the development of a programme to improve the skills of commercial court judges. The programme was developed jointly by the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, the UK Ministry of Justice (MOJ), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the British Embassy in Ukraine.

The programme is aimed at strengthening the capacity of commercial courts and will provide Ukrainian judges with the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with British colleagues and practitioners who will share best UK and international practices in resolving commercial disputes and enhancing the enforcement of judgments and arbitral awards. Ukrainian colleagues will share their own experience in commercial disputes. The programme is primarily focused on developing a professional dialogue between Ukrainian and British judges.

The programme will consist of approximately 20 hours of interactive sessions to be held online over a period of almost 10 weeks. The sessions will be scheduled at the most convenient dates and times for participants and trainers. Each session will be preceded by a period of preliminary reading of the materials. The online sessions will be followed by face-to-face sessions (three to four days) in the UK or in a location close to Ukraine, possibly in Poland. Participation in the programme is free of charge, but requires knowledge of English. The programme is scheduled to be implemented in the second half of 2025.
