Another step towards cleansing from the Soviet past: 103 courts renamed

25 april 2025, 09:00

Today, on 25 April 2025, the Law of Ukraine ‘On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the Judiciary and the Status of Judges” regarding the Change of the Name of Local General Courts’ No. 4273-IX came into force.

Changes to the names of local general courts are part of a comprehensive process of decommunisation and the establishment of Ukrainian national identity in the public space. In addition, the updated names of the courts are now consistent with the names of the administrative-territorial units in which they are located.

Thus, the names of a number of courts have been brought into line with the Laws of Ukraine ‘On Condemnation of Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) Totalitarian Regimes in Ukraine and Prohibition of Propaganda of Their Symbols’, ‘On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language’, ‘On Assigning Names (Pseudonyms) of Individuals, Anniversaries and Holidays, Names and Dates of Historical Events to Legal Entities and Property Objects’.

The list of local general courts whose names have been changed is available at the following link: https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/4273-20#Text.
