16 january 2025, 16:56

Over the past year, Ukraine's public authorities, including the Supreme Court, have been actively working on the issue of European integration. Undoubtedly, every effort will continue to be made in this process, but for the most effective work in this area, Ukraine needs the support of reliable partners.

This was stated by the President of the Supreme Court, Stanislav Kravchenko, during a meeting with Canada's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine, Natalka Cmoc.

First of all, the President of the Supreme Court congratulated Canada on the beginning of its presidency in the Group of Seven and expressed gratitude to the government and people of Canada for supporting Ukraine in this difficult time.

In addition, Stanislav Kravchenko informed the Ambassador about the key performance indicators of the Supreme Court, focusing on the challenges it faces. Among them are a significant workload, new categories of cases coming for consideration, and a problem that is becoming increasingly relevant both for the Supreme Court and the entire judicial system - the shortage of staff.

According to the President of the Supreme Court, this situation is due to two main factors: the length of the competition procedures and the resignation of judges.

The meeting also focused on certain issues of Ukraine's European integration movement and further prospects for meeting EU requirements, as well as continued cooperation between judicial institutions of states to exchange experience that will contribute to the development of international law.

Natalka Cmoc stressed that Canada supports Ukraine in its European integration ambitions and assured that support for the justice system, in particular in the framework of the drive to meet EU requirements, will continue to be an unwavering priority in the work of the Group of Seven. Therefore, Canada is open to discussing possible forms and areas of cooperation in this regard and is ready to provide the necessary expert assistance.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Canada to Ukraine Sean Boyd, First Deputy Chief of Staff - Head of the Department for Analytical and Legal Work of the Supreme Court Rasim Babanly and Head of the Division for International Cooperation Lina Hubar.
