During the meeting held at the Supreme Court, the President of the Supreme Court, Stanislav Kravchenko, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, discussed, in particular, the main challenges facing the judiciary in the process of European integration.
Stanislav Kravchenko noted that the judiciary has demonstrated its ability to function effectively in a full-scale war and, despite all the difficulties, continues to move gradually and confidently towards compliance with EU requirements.
The President of the Supreme Court also reported on progress in the selection of judges, highlighting the lengthy and multi-stage selection process and the serious shortage of staff in the judiciary.
The Ambassador stressed the complexity and importance of the structural reforms that Ukraine needs to implement, noting that the judiciary in Italy had once faced problems similar to those in Ukraine. In connection with the discussion on the need to fill vacancies in the courts as soon as possible, Carlo Formosa said that not only the level of qualification of judges, but also their number plays an important role in ensuring the proper functioning of the courts.
The meeting also discussed the training of judges and the Italian experience in this area.
In conclusion, the President of the Supreme Court emphasised that an independent and effective judiciary is the foundation of a democratic state and that in order to ensure its sustainable development, a whole range of measures must be taken to improve the system as a whole. In this regard, it is very important to study the European experience and form a common vision of certain reform processes and ways of solving current problems.
The meeting was also attended by the First Secretary of the Embassy of the Italian Republic in Ukraine, Damiano La Verde, the First Deputy Chief of Staff - Head of the Department for Analytical and Legal Work of the Supreme Court, Rasim Babanly, and the Head of the Division for International Cooperation, Lina Hubar.
