Nataliia Antoniuk, Vice President of the Criminal Cassation Court of the Supreme Court, participated in the course "Criminal Justice Response to Corruption" organised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in cooperation with the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI).
Nataliia Antoniuk gave a presentation on the model of criminal proceedings against corruption in Ukraine and highlighted the positive and negative aspects of Ukrainian legislation in this area.
During the visit, participants from more than 20 countries paid study visits to key state institutions, including the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Justice, the State Customs Service and the Parliament. The participants held thematic discussions with representatives of various legal professions of the host country (Japan), including judges, lawyers, prosecutors, representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ethics Service, parliamentarians, etc.
The Vice President of the CrimCC of the Supreme Court discussed ways of overcoming corruption with foreign experts from various countries. The focus was on ways to prevent corruption and the involvement of lawyers in creating an anti-corruption culture among young people. All sessions of the course also focused on improving the pre-trial investigation and court proceedings in corruption cases and optimising these stages in order to reduce the timeframe for criminal proceedings in this area. The participants of the programme analysed the most important corruption cases in each country, the peculiarities of the investigation of such crimes and court decisions in these cases, and drew attention to the challenges that arose during the investigation of criminal cases and court proceedings.
The Vice President of the SC CrimCC also participated in the third expert meeting of the Anti-Corruption Task Force for Ukraine (ACT for Ukraine), where the participants discussed the activities of Ukrainian anti-corruption institutions and ways to improve their work. In addition to representatives of the G7 countries, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine (2021-2024) Kuninori Matsuda took part in the work of the group.
