This year's conference took place on 4 October in Athens (Greece) and was attended by the presidents of the supreme courts of the EU member states, Albania, Iceland, Montenegro, Serbia, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.
The President of the Supreme Court of Greece for Civil and Criminal Cases (Areios Pagos) Ioanna Klapa-Christodoulea and the President of the Supreme Court of Sweden and Chairman of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union Anders Eka delivered welcoming speeches.
In his speech, Anders Eka paid special attention, in particular, to the war in Ukraine. He called for international solidarity and expressed support for the Ukrainian people, who are bravely resisting the enemy, and for the national judicial system, which continues to function effectively even in the face of numerous challenges related to the war.
The President of the EU Network of Presidents of Supreme Judicial Courts also recalled the tragedy that took place on 28 September this year in Kharkiv region - the death of Supreme Court Judge Leonid Loboiko, who was delivering humanitarian aid to the residents of the border village of Kozacha Lopan.
The first session of the conference was devoted to the discussion of the impact of European law on national law, in particular on the methodology of the courts. Christophe Soulard, the First President of the French Cour de Cassation, made an introductory presentation on this issue.
During the second session, the participants discussed the attractiveness of the judicial system, examining the key factors that influence the attractiveness of a judicial career and focusing on such aspects as the selection procedures for judges, career prospects, judicial remuneration and social security. Reports on these issues were presented by the President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic Petr Angyalossy, the President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania Danguolė Bublienė and the President of the Supreme Court of Slovenia Miodrag Đorđević.
The conference was also attended by President of the European Court of Human Rights Marko Bošnjak, ECHR Judge from Greece Ioannis Ktistakis and President of the EFTA Court Páll Hreinsson.
We would like to remind you that on 14 October 2022, the Supreme Court was granted observer status in the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union by the decision of the General Assembly of the Network.
