03 september 2024, 16:51

Judges of the Supreme Court Oleksandr Banasko, Iryna Vorobiova, Yan Bernaziuk, Liudmyla Byvsheva, Olena Bilokon, Olena Hubska and Olesia Radyshevska took part in the training for instructors of the National School of Judges of Ukraine ‘’Case law of the European Court of Human Rights in cases concerning Ukraine and other Council of Europe member states‘’, which took place in Krakow (Republic of Poland).

The event included a workshop on ‘Methods and challenges in teaching the European Convention on Human Rights’, which outlined the main problems faced by Ukrainian judges in applying the ECHR case law and discussed ways to improve teaching methods at the National School of Judges of Ukraine.

The preparatory cycle for the training on ECHR case law included an assessment of the curriculum needs, the setting of objectives, the development of a course plan and the selection of appropriate teaching methods. They also discussed the specificities of training members of the judiciary, effective teaching practices, a multimodal training scheme and the selection of relevant ECHR case law for such purposes.

The participants worked on the design of the training: the main text, questions and tasks. In addition, the Ukrainian judges acquired relevant knowledge on preparing presentations, establishing communication with the audience and learning interactive methods and techniques of group facilitation. They also considered modern training methods for teaching ECHR case law. In particular, they discussed the integration of innovative technologies into the training process.

The event was organised by the National School of Judges of Ukraine with the support of the Council of Europe project ‘Support to the functioning of justice in the war and post-war context in Ukraine’.
