On the difficult path of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, it should be duly appreciated that the national legal system does not need to start from scratch in the process of adapting legislation to EU acquis and implementing the approaches of European judicial institutions, since current national legislation is based on European standards, and courts are actively studying and applying the case law of the ECtHR and the EU Court of Justice.
This was emphasized by Supreme Court President Stanislav Kravchenko during a meeting of the Steering Committee of the EU Pravo-Justice III Project. He also noted the effectiveness of the Court's long-term cooperation with the Project.
"At the end of 2023, the Supreme Court, together with the EU Pravo-Justice III Project, presented the Supreme Observer modern law portal and the updated Supreme Court Legal Position Database. These are extremely important resources that contribute to the effective fulfillment of one of the key tasks of the Supreme Court - ensuring the unity of judicial practice,” Stanislav Kravchenko emphasized.
The President of the Supreme Court also noted that the work of the courts is now largely focused on recording the evidence base in war crimes cases. At the same time, the courts have already received more than 2,000 relevant criminal proceedings, approximately 1,500 of which have already been considered by the courts of first instance, about 100 decisions have been reviewed on appeal and another 12 on cassation.
At the same time, a number of categories of war-related cases are currently being considered by the courts in administrative, commercial and civil proceedings.
"Last year, the courts considered more than 4.3 million cases, which is actually the pre-war figure. And now, despite all the difficulties, the judicial system continues to function effectively and copes with its tasks,” stated Stanislav Kravchenko.
In conclusion, the SC President expressed his gratitude to the EU Pravo-Justice III Project for reliable and effective cooperation and for supporting Ukraine, in particular its judicial system, in the European integration process.
“We understand that we are facing difficult tasks, but if we act together and in a coordinated manner, we will definitely make it,” Stanislav Kravchenko said.
