Stanislav Kravchenko, President of the Supreme Court, made this statement during a working meeting with Danielle Bell, Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
The Chief Justice emphasized the leading role of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine in ensuring the protection and promotion of human rights in our country, improving access to justice and bringing perpetrators to justice.
Stanislav Kravchenko also underlined that the proper collection of evidence of crimes committed in Ukraine, with the assistance of the Monitoring Mission, is a necessary basis for the further process of establishing justice and punishing the perpetrators.
Additionally, the Supreme Court President addressed the establishment of a special international tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and expressed optimism in the UN Monitoring Mission's backing of this proposal.
Danielle Bell thanked the Supreme Court for its longstanding and reliable cooperation, which is essential to the Mission's goals of ensuring justice and protecting human rights.
The Head of the UN Monitoring Mission expressed her admiration for the fact that Ukraine's judicial system continues to function in the face of war and the daily security risks associated with it.
She also said that the Mission's mandate includes monitoring and documenting human rights violations, including elements of international crimes. The information gathered is then passed on to the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Violations in Ukraine, the International Criminal Court, other international institutions and national authorities.
Finally, Danielle Bell stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with the Supreme Court to bring those responsible for crimes in Ukraine to justice.
The participants of the meeting outlined other areas of cooperation, including ensuring compliance with international standards in the judicial process, including consideration of criminal proceedings for war crimes, as well as analysis of case law on judicial immunity of the state in the context of cases related to compensation for damage caused by war.
