Under martial law, the Ukrainian courts have faced many difficulties, particularly organisational, staffing and logistical, and the format of their work has changed significantly and adapted to the new realities.
This was stated by the President of the Supreme Court Stanislav Kravchenko at the Fifth Forum of the Lord Slynn European Law Foundation "Impunity and Developments in Ukraine".
The event was attended by Sir Stephen Irvine, Chair of the Slynn Foundation and retired Justice of Appeal; Victoria Prentis, Attorney General for England and Wales and Member of Parliament; Simon Smith, UK Ambassador to Ukraine 2012-2015; and Andriy Kostin, Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
In his speech, the SC President spoke about the challenges faced by the judiciary, drawing attention to the problematic aspects of considering criminal proceedings for war crimes, the significant shortage of judicial personnel and the impossibility of administering justice by courts located in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
The head of the Supreme Court also noted the successful cooperation with the Foundation, adding that such a partnership was a guarantee that Ukrainians would have access to fair and impartial justice and effective protection of their rights and freedoms, even in times of war. Stanislav Kravchenko also took the opportunity to thank the people and government of the United Kingdom for their comprehensive support for Ukraine during these difficult times.
