Today, October 22, 2021, the Plenum of the Supreme Court, by a majority vote of the general composition of the Plenum, elected Vsevolod Kniaziev as President of the Supreme Court by secret ballot. He will take up his duties as President of the Supreme Court on December 1, 2021. Vsevolod Kniaziev was nominated for this position by judges of the Administrative Cassation Court within the Supreme Court.
Volodymyr Pohrebniak, Secretary of the Judicial Chamber on Bankruptcy Cases of the Commercial Cassation Court within the Supreme Court, who was nominated for this position by judges of the Commercial Cassation Court, and Oleh Tkachuk, Judge of the Civil Cassation Court within the Supreme Court as a self-nominated candidate, also applied for the position of the Supreme Court President.
In his speech as a candidate for the President of the Supreme Court, Vsevolod Kniaziev assured that he would do everything possible to increase the authority and institutional capacity of the judiciary.
Among his tasks as the President of the Supreme Court, he mentioned the strengthening of communication between judges of the Supreme Court, judges of local and appellate courts and society.
"I am ready to defend the interests of the entire judicial system and to represent and defend each judge - so different, but united by a common aspiration for justice," Vsevolod Kniaziev concluded.
The newly elected President of the Supreme Court, Vsevolod Kniaziev, was supported by 98 votes in favor. 49 judges voted for Volodymyr Pohrebniak. Oleh Tkachuk received 7 judges' votes. 9 judges did not support any candidate, 5 ballots were declared invalid.
At the meeting of the Plenum of the Supreme Court, Vsevolod Kniaziev took the oath of office as a member of the High Council of Justice, whose duties he will begin to perform on December 1, 2021. Vsevolod Kniaziev assured: "We will build a strong judiciary in a democratic country."
It should be recalled that the President of the Supreme Court is elected from among the judges of the Supreme Court for a term of four years, with the right to hold the office of President of the Supreme Court for no more than two consecutive terms.
The powers of the current President of the Supreme Court Valentyna Danishevska expire on November 30, 2021.
