“The Supreme Court Should Serve as an Example for Other Courts”, – President of Ukraine

14 december 2018, 13:39

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko emphasized on this in his welcoming address while the conference "The Role of the Supreme Court in Protecting Human Rights and Freedoms" devoted the first year of the Supreme Court’s functioning.

“Last year we witnessed how judges of the new Supreme Court took an oath and the Court began its work. It has been exactly one year since the launch of the new Supreme Court. A lot has been made over this year” – the Head of State remarked.

Pursuant to Mr. President, the judicial reform was aimed at creating a strong, independent, corruption-free court. The court, which acts on the principles of the rule of law, adheres to the principles of competence, independence, impartiality and responsibility.

The actual restructuring of the system, the change of approaches to the creation of courts, the selection of judges and the formation of judiciary bodies under the best European models began only after the changes to the Constitution of Ukraine in relation to justice in 2016. The President noted that two years ago, we only dreamed of a new judicial system, new approaches to the work of the court, new understandable rules of judicial process that would change the approaches to responsibility and justice in our state.

“Today, step by step, we realize them. The Supreme Court clearly demonstrates that all this is possible in practice. Therefore, it depends on you, dear judges, whether we will hold these positions, whether the Supreme Court will become the real leader of changes in the judiciary. And in the end, how quickly the judiciary will become strong, independent and effective – in the interests of every Ukrainian. The Supreme Court should serve as an example for other courts – both newly created appellate and district, which will be established, as well as the High Anti-Corruption Court and the High Court on Intellectual Property, contests to which are currently being conducted by the High Qualification Commission of Judges”, – the Head of State stressed.

“I have faith in every one of you. I definitely believe in fair Ukrainian court. I believe in Ukraine”, – Petro Poroshenko finished his greeting with these words.
