Last year, on 21 February 2022, the Ethics Council conducted a session during which the first interviews with candidates for the position of the member of the High Council of Justice took place.
Unfortunately, the start of the “active” stage of our work took place a few days before the start of a full-scale military invasion of the rf in Ukraine. On February 23, we still managed to conduct the scheduled interviews, but on February 24 we were forced to postpone the conduct of the interviews.
However, despite the war, the work of the Ethics Council on the formation of a professional composition of the High Council of Justice with integrity did not stop. In early May, we conducted regular interviews with the HCJ’s members and continued our work with respect to the selection of candidates.
Hence, in the past year, the Ethics Council evaluated 4 HCJ members and 97 candidates for the position of the member of the HCJ, having conducted 88 interviews in total. As a result, 3 HCJ members and 28 candidates were recognized as such who comply with the criterion of professional ethics and integrity, while 1 HCJ member and 38 candidates were found to be non-compliant.
And most importantly, with the support of the Ethics Council, the renewed High Council of Justice has finally started its work. Ukraine has managed to fulfill one of the most important requirements of the EU on its way to European integration.
