LEV KYSHAKEVYCH: THANKS TO THE ETHICS COUNCIL’S WORK UKRAINE HAS FULFILLED ONE OF THE KEY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EU MEMBERSHIP

13 january 2023, 10:15

On January 12 the XIXth Congress of Judges of Ukraine filled in all of its vacant positions in the High Council of Justice. Thanks to this the HCJ will become duly competent, while Ukraine will be one step closer to membership in the European Union. Currently the total number of the HCJ members amounts to 15 persons, which is why work of the highest judicial governance body will be finally renewed almost after a one-year break. Now the HCJ will be able to dismiss and appoint judges, transfer judges from one court to another, give consent to their arrest, bring them to disciplinary responsibility, etc. This will allow, among other things, to start filling in vacant positions in courts in the nearest future.

Thus, thanks to the persistent work of the Ethics Council that recommended the worthiest candidates, the renewed HCJ, members of which comply with the criteria of professional ethics and integrity, will start working. Ukraine is one step closer to membership in the EU, which along with our victory in the war will significantly speed up our development as an independent legal state. The Ethics Council has carried out objective evaluation and suggested to the Council of Judges a sufficient number of worthy candidates for the position of the HCJ member, thereby having confirmed its effectiveness and refuted any scepticism regarding its work.

Read about this and other things in a recent column of the Ethics Council’s Chair Lev Kyshakevych for “Ukrainska Pravda”.
